Zealandia Villa – Integration of Bali’s Three Main Mountains

Sacred Mountains as Inspiration

Zealandia Villa, located in Kerobokan, Bali, draws its design inspiration from the island’s three sacred mountains: Gunung Agung, Gunung Batukaru, and Gunung Abang. These peaks hold deep spiritual significance in Balinese Hinduism, representing the pillars that connect earth and sky. The villa’s architectural form echoes the ascending profiles of these mountains, creating a structure that feels both grounded and aspirational.

Modern Lodge Philosophy

The design embraces a modern lodge philosophy — warm, substantial, and deeply connected to its setting. Rather than pursuing the minimalist glass-box aesthetic common in contemporary tropical villas, Zealandia Villa favors textured surfaces, layered spaces, and a sense of enclosure that invites rest and reflection. Skylights are strategically placed throughout the villa, allowing natural light to penetrate deep into interior spaces while framing views of the sky above.

Material Palette

The material selection reinforces the villa’s connection to Bali’s landscape. Kerobokan sandstone — quarried locally — forms the primary wall surfaces, lending the structure an earthy warmth and tactile quality. This is complemented by natural wood elements that bring organic warmth to ceilings and furniture, while colored cement is used for flooring and accent surfaces, adding subtle tonal variation throughout the spaces.

A Villa Rooted in Place

Zealandia Villa represents Lumbung Architect’s ability to translate cultural narratives into built form. By drawing from the symbolism of Bali’s three main mountains, the design creates an architecture that is not merely functional or beautiful, but meaningful — a home that tells a story and connects its inhabitants to the island’s spiritual geography.
