Ancient Wisdom, Modern Design
The HAMULe project received second place in the IAI Bali Awards 2024 under the category “Sayembara Konsep Desain Sekretariat IAI Bali.” The name HAMULe derives from an ancient Balinese term meaning “original,” drawing inspiration from the ATB Mula tradition in Tenganan village.
Design Approach
The concept utilizes a transformable bale panjang structure adapted into a modular building system. The 250-square-meter site on Jl. Tunjung Biru in Denpasar Timur required careful attention to local building regulations, including mandatory setbacks and height restrictions.
Core Principles
The design emphasizes flexibility and inclusivity, with adaptable interior layouts fostering stronger connections among IAI members. Sustainability is achieved through local material sourcing and a simple 3-meter structural grid ensuring efficient construction. The project functions as a knowledge hub and creative center for Bali’s architectural community.
The design team was led by IGN Andri Saputra, S.T., IAI, with creative designers Komang Satrya Sukma Dinata, Ar. Putu Bagus Guna Laksana, and Putu Aditya Saputra.
